"In the Company of Writers" program offers a series of personal and conversational dialogues featuring guest writers/poets followed by an open mic forum that occurs the 2nd Wednesday of each month. These inspirational gatherings will elucidate and entertain those attending. The guest author speaks from 7-8 PM with an open mic from 8 -9 PM. The Chicago blues music of “Hollywood Johnny Cosgrove” (accompanied by Charlie Wilkinson) welcomes you, continues during intermission, and closes the evening. Sign-ups for the open are available at the entrance. Cathy Smith Bowers, a former Poet-Laureate of North Carolina, lives in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Her work has appeared in The Atlantic, The Georgia Review, Poetry, Prairie Schooner, Ploughshares, The Southern Review, The Kenyon Review and other journals. Her poems have also been featured on Garrison Keillor’s Poetry Almanac and on Poetry Daily. Her first book The Love That Ended Yesterday in Texas was the inaugural winner of The Texas Tech University Press First Book Competition. Her fifth book, The Collected Poems of Cathy Smith Bowers, published by Press 53, won the 2014 SIBA Award for Poetry. Cathy’s most recent book The Abiding Image: Inspiration and Guidance for Beginning Writers, Readers, and Teachers of Poetry was published in 2021 by Press 53.
Lee Stockdale won the United Kingdom National Poetry Prize, the Sidney Lanier Poetry Prize, and others. His work appears in The Poetry Review, The Guardian, Ekphrastic Review, anthologies, and other places. After college, he enlisted in the Army to have something to write about, then stayed for 30 years, retiring as a Judge Advocate Colonel, with stops as a Military Policeman, Infantry Company Commander, and PSYOP Officer. He earned an MFA from Queens University, Charlotte. And in 2022, his book Gorilla was published by Main Street Rag Publishing Company. A former Buncombe County rep for NCWN, he has facilitated poetry craft workshops at Isothermal Community College and elsewhere. He and his wife, a Navy veteran, live in Fairview.
