About this Event
Nature Photography 101 - Learn the Basics
New to photography or looking to build confidence with your camera? This beginner-friendly workshop is the perfect place to start. You’ll get hands-on guidance to understand your camera and take control of your settings.
This 2-hour classroom-style session covers:
- Your Starting Point – Discuss your current skill level and where you’d like to grow.
- Gear Review – Understanding your own camera. Explore the buttons, dials, screens and sound on your equipment. In order to use your equipment, you need to understand all the features and benefits at your fingertips.
- Camera Settings – Basic understanding of your camera, where to adjust the three key components of Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO.
To assist with being prepared, please prepare the following information:
- Camera Gear: Camera Make and Model Lens
- What do you like to photograph? If it is everything, please drill down on what you shoot the most, or what you would like to get better at capturing. This will help with guiding on settings, equipment set up and fine-tuning custom settings!
- What skill level are you at? Do you set your camera on automatic (green), use camera settings like shutter/aperture priority, or full manual
- Is there anything specific you struggle with - equipment settings, blurry images, getting the camera set right for the shot, etc.
- What is your main goal for the workshop?
Please Also Bring:
- Your camera, a notebook, and your camera manual!

About the Instructor:
Jo-Anne Oucharek is an award-winning wildlife photographer with a passion for capturing the raw beauty and hidden stories of nature. Photography has always been part of her life, but when she moved to Cochrane in 2014, she brought her camera out of retirement—and discovered a whole new adventure behind the lens.
For Jo-Anne, photography is about more than images—it’s about connection. She shares her work through both photos and the stories that bring them to life, hoping to inspire others to see the beauty, resilience, and importance of the creatures she is privileged to witness in their natural world. Over the past decade, she has also built strong bonds with like-minded photographers who share the belief that nature must always come first.
