Join us for a stroll through Threave Nature Reserve to find out how traditional grazing meets modern technology to restore local ecosystems.
About this Event

This two-hour walk and talk is a chance to see nature-friendly farming in action.

We will be heading out into the grass to meet the herd, but these are no ordinary cattle. You will get a first-hand look at the high-tech GPS collars they wear, which allow for precision grazing without the need for traditional fences.

We will be joined by a fantastic group of locals who live and breathe this landscape.

Nature and Heritage

As we walk, we will look closely at the plants that have started to thrive, during this transition period, under this adaptive grazing regime. By disturbing the ground and eating specific grasses, the cows create space for a greater diversity of plant species; these, in turn, provide a home for a diverse range of insects and birds. It is a good example of how farming and nature can work hand in hand rather than in competition.

Support Local Farming

To wrap up our afternoon, you will have the opportunity to have a conversation about the potential opportunity to offer Christmas beef boxes at the National Trust for Scotland at Threave and other NTS properties. Buying this meat, could directly support the conservation work you see on Threave nature Reserve and support a local business (Nicola). Ensuring that local farming remains viable while nature continues to flourish.

Speakers

David (NTS Head Ranger): David will explain the wider ecology (grasslands,

wetlands, woodlands) of the reserve and how the cattle act as ecosystem

engineers.

Ruth Ashton-Shaw (Local Farmer): A leader in organic food, Ruth will share

her insights on the vital link between healthy soil and the food on our plates.

Nicola (Herdswoman)/David: Nicola will introduce us to the cows themselves,

discussing their welfare and David on how the GPS technology works on a day-

to-day basis.
