NATURAL DYE WORKSHOP WITH WITH PAPAHOA FIBREWORKSFROM GARDEN TO CLOTH- LEARN HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN NATURALLY DYED MATERIAL
We’ve been colouring our clothes with plant-based dyes for thousands of years, but it is only in the last 200, since synthetic dyes have been introduced, that most of us have lost the knowledge to create beautiful natural colour at home.
This workshop allows you the opportunity to dip your toe into the world of botanical dyes and learn about the spectrum of colour and techniques at our disposal from garden-grown plants, foraged finds and even food waste.
We’ll also talk a little about dye plants, what colours they create and their place in history.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
* Immersion and bundle dye techniques
* Create unique designs on two cotton samples
* Apply your skills to dye a silk habotai neckerchief
* Use your cotton samples for mending, sewing, quilting, or textile art

* Two cotton sample pieces for future projects
* Foundational skills in botanical dyeing
PAPAHOA FIBREWORKS
Seonaid Burnie and Gina Russell are the founders of Papahoa Fibreworks, united by a shared commitment to rethinking the textile industry through sustainability and regeneration.
Gina, an organic farmer trained at BHU Organic College, explores how textiles can be grown, used, and ultimately returned to the earth, leading her Growing Textiles project and collaborations with industry and soil experts.
Seonaid, a textile designer from Scotland with a degree from the University of Dundee, specialises in botanical dyeing and creates one-of-a-kind pieces through her business, The Clothworks. Now heading the Dyehouse, she uses locally grown plants to produce natural colour. Together, they are building a new model for textiles—one rooted in ecology, creativity, and responsible practice.
