Native American and First Nation Figures in Sculpture: North American Monuments, Memorials and Statuary of 50 Artists
by Fred F. Poyner IV
This new book examines sculptors both old and new, and how the work of each one has presented Native Americans and First Nation figures found throughout the public sculpture of North America over the past 200 years.
The narrative offers a thorough examination of artworks by 50 sculptors throughout the United States and Canada, and how these artists have incorporated either traditional Native techniques, or European artistic styles to create figurative subjects in wood, stone, marble, bronze, and other materials. Both “historical” statuary, and public sculpture that has distinctive artistic representation or styles are examined, along with oral history interviews, photographs, and personal insights & stories to help better understand these artworks. Each sculptor reflects a mixture of gender, ethnicity, and nationality.
4Culture of King County has provided support for the book with a 2023 Heritage Project Award, with additional support made possible through the Washington State Arts Commission.
Includes interviews with 21 contemporary artists, Forward by PḰȺELWEȽTEN Charles W. Bloomfield, and Epigraph by Mary Porter Eagle Has Landed.
