Celebrate National Poetry Month with a night of high-impact poetry and powerful voices! Join us for a special slam hosted by award-winning poet and powerhouse performer KaNikki Jakarta.
This isn’t just another open mic—it’s a battle of bars, metaphors, and emotion. A showcase of raw talent, lyrical finesse, and the undeniable magic of spoken word.
🎤 What to Expect:
Two rounds. One mic. A room full of energy.
Poets will go head-to-head in front of a live audience and a panel of randomly selected judges. After the second round, one poet will walk away with the $100 cash prize and eternal bragging rights.
📝 Slam Rules:
- Poets must arrive 30 minutes before showtime.
- Names and order of performance will be drawn at random.
- Each poet gets 3 minutes + 10 seconds grace to perform one original poem. Time penalties apply.
- No props, costumes, or musical instruments.
- Poems must be performed solo.
- Reading from paper or device is allowed (but not as a prop!).
- 6 poets will be eliminated after Round 1.

About the Host:
KaNikki Jakarta is not just a name—it’s a movement. With over two decades in the poetry scene, she’s opened for the likes of Jill Scott, Raheem DeVaughn, and Lyfe Jennings. An author, performer, and advocate for authentic storytelling, KaNikki brings both heart and fire to every mic she touches.
She currently hosts every first Monday at Busboys and Poets Shirlington, curating spaces where stories are safe, sacred, and seen.
