Narcan Training Event to Combat Overdose Epidemic in Tennessee

The Addiction & Recovery Commission of the Episcopal Diocese of West Tennessee is hosting a crucial Narcan training session on Saturday, June 22, 2024, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This event, located at Barth House Episcopal Center, 409 Patterson Street, aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and respond to drug overdoses, potentially saving lives in the process. Refreshments will be provided.
The training will be conducted by a Regional Overdose Prevention Specialist who will provide an in-depth overview of the overdose epidemic, including its causes and impacts. Participants will gain an understanding of how substance misuse affects the brain and learn about harm reduction principles that can mitigate the risks associated with drug use.
A significant portion of the training will focus on recognizing the signs of an overdose and administering naloxone, commonly known as Narcan. This life-saving medication can reverse the effects of opioid overdoses, including those caused by fentanyl, a potent illicit opioid responsible for many overdose deaths. According to the Tennessee Department of Health and Substance Abuse Services, 3,826 Tennesseans died of drug overdoses in 2022, with a substantial number involving fentanyl. With proper training and access to naloxone, the community can take active steps to reduce these tragic fatalities.
Attendees will not only receive valuable information and hands-on training but will also be provided with refreshments. This session represents an essential opportunity for community members to come together and contribute to the fight against the overdose crisis in Tennessee.
