About this Event

Please join us at the opening reception for Providence-based artist Nan Joubá's One Thousand Olneyvilles (May 21 - June 8, 2026), an exhibition showing new work that was funded by PPS's Community Heritage Fellowship in 2025 - 2026.

Olneyville Square is an area of bustling activity: restaurants, shops, artist-studios, office spaces, a community library and residential buildings coexist with access to highway 6 and neighborhoods to the west of downtown Providence. The area is considered “prime for redevelopment” by the city and change seems imminent. In such a moment of flux, the video-exhibit ONE THOUSAND OLNEYVILLES explores the physical landscape in this area, documents desires and concerns of locals, and offers ways to amplify them.

Hernán “Nan” Joubá is an Argentinean-born, Providence-based director, writer and producer with over 10 years of experience leading special projects for public spaces, theater and film, and designing cultural programs across New England. After training in theater in Argentina and studying filmmaking in Japan, Nan Joubá traveled extensively across the Abya Yala/Americas and eventually re-located to Providence RI in 2014. His practice combines filmmaking and theater traditions to create boundary pushing videos and live performances. He loves working collaboratively with artists and actors to create new audiovisual experiences for people. You can follow him on Instagram at @nan_jouba and @shubappoi (ig)

About the Project

PPS's Community Heritage Fellowship in 2025-26 provided funding for two Providence-based artists to create multidisciplinary art projects related to community heritage, preservation, and place in the city. This program was originally awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, but this grant was rescinded when President Trump took office. Despite this setback, PPS was able to proceed with the generous support of the following foundations and agencies: Civis Foundation; Papitto Opportunity Connection; Providence's Arts, Culture and Tourism Department; Rhode Island State Council for the Arts; and an individual PPS donor. Joubá’s project, One Thousand Olneyvilles, explores the tension between the diverse communities that have made their homes in Olneyville for decades or more and the specter of heightened development, gentrification and displacement. Nan worked with community members to envision alternative futures for this neighborhood, culminating in the work at this exhibition. The second exhibition funded by this program will open at PPS in the Fall of 2026 -- stay tuned!
