About this Event
The Nakatani Gong Orchestra (NGO) is a large ensemble touring contemporary sound art project. Gong master Tatsuya Nakatani trains a 16-member ensemble of locally-based musicians to play his adapted bowed gongs, then conducts them in a performance of his original compositions. In the last decade, the NGO has performed hundreds of concerts involving thousands of participants around the world in the creation of these transformative sound works. The kobo bows, mallets, and surrounding instrumentation equipment have all been developed and are hand crafted by Tatsuya Nakatani for this work.
"Nakatani is billed as a percussionist and sound artist, but there’s something meditative, even sacral, about listening to both his extended and sometimes-cacophonous solo piece and his collaboration with a Gong Orchestra. I kept expecting the bowing and drumming of the gongs would eventually unleash a bigger sound, but at key moments Nakatani seemed to pull his musicians back, to encourage them to feel the silence amidst the notes. It was a mesmerizing experience.” - Hissing Lawns review
