N.A.B.S. Got Something to Say | Documentary Film Screening + Community Talk

N.A.B.S Got Something To Say (NGSTS), is a fully-immersive storytelling experience that highlights a pioneer and other unsung heroes from Durham’s music history. Through cinema, music, art, and dialogue, our collective will curate an exclusive experience and deliver an evening of inspiration, entertainment, and awareness of North Carolina’s contribution to the hip-hop culture.

In recognition of N.A.B.S reaching his 40th DJ anniversary and being honored by the City of Durham as the 2024 Hometown Hero Award recipient, this event is a celebration of his phenomenal career and global impact on music culture.

THE EXPERIENCE

Back When It Was Rap Exhibit Installation of authentic artifacts that will be on exhibit for guests to view in the gallery which will also serve as a backdrop for red carpet photos as guest enter and exit the venue.

Documentary Screening The feature-length film, with surround sound, will include historical footage of concert performances, audio recordings, archival materials, and interviews with notable artists, producers, colleagues, and DJs.

Oral History The screening is followed by a Q&A session for the audience to have an opportunity to engage in dialogue with N.A.B.S about the film.

FILM SYNOPSIS

By 1984, a slim, young kid in Durham, North Carolina, knew he wanted to be the best DJ on the planet. Four years later, Youtha Fowler, professionally known as N.A.B.S, left his hometown to pursue big dreams in the city of Atlanta. The aspiring Bull City native became one of the most prolific DJs of his time.

The film covers his 40-year career in the industry as N.A.B.S pushed boundaries, elevated the status quo, and continues to move DJ culture forward with his creative vision and innovation.

Presented in a stunning display of graphics, artifacts, vintage recordings, and music, the documentary reveals N.A.B.S.'s journey of survival and reinvention through the challenging entertainment business. View the trailer on Vimeo.
