Myths Remixed: How to Write Bold Retellings of Classic Tales

3-Hour Writing Workshop Proposal

For as long as humans have gathered around campfires, we’ve told myths. Greek epics, Arthurian legends, fairy tales, and even modern icons like James Bond and Marvel superheroes - all of them are stories we keep returning to because they help us understand ourselves and our world.

But retelling a myth isn’t simply copying the original story. The best retellings bring something new to the conversation. In this workshop, author Betsy Ellor (Hera: Kingdom of Lies) guides writers through the art of transforming classic myths, legends, and folklore into compelling modern stories. Participants will learn how retellings work, what readers expect, and how to find the fresh angle that makes an old story feel new again.

This interactive workshop combines discussion, craft lessons, and guided writing exercises designed to help participants begin, or strengthen, their own myth retelling projects.

What We’ll Do Together

- Explore famous myth retellings from literature, film, and pop culture and why they continue to resonate with modern audiences

- Break down what makes successful retellings work

- Examine how myths evolve as cultures reinterpret them.

- Identify your personal connection to a myth and why it matters to your storytelling.

- Look at the development of Hera: Kingdom of Lies as a real-world example of building a retelling from research and personal perspective.

- Participate in guided writing exercises to find new angles on old myths

By the End You’ll Leave With:

- A clear understanding of how myth retellings work.

- Strategies for choosing the right myth to retell.

- Tools for finding the fresh angle that makes your version unique.

- Pages of new writing generated during the workshop.

- Inspiration to carry your project forward

- Resources to help you on your journey

For thousands of years, storytellers have been adding their voices to these stories. Now it’s your turn.
