We will work with living materials to explore how making can become more connected, ecological, and caring. These weekly workshops are an invitation to learn hands-on with mycelium and other sustainable processes in a creative, experimental lab setting — no prior experience needed. They will take place in the Mycelia lab in Portland.
Across two sessions, you will create a small mycelium sculpture from start to finish. In the first 2-hour workshop, you’ll learn the foundations: what mycelium is, how it grows, how to prepare and shape a substrate, and how to work cleanly and collaboratively with a living organism. The focus is not on perfection or scale, but on understanding process and relationship.
The following week, we meet again to open your piece, observe the growth, and carefully dehydrate it so you can take it home. This second session is about witnessing transformation and learning how care, time, and environment shape material outcomes.
These workshops are designed to bridge a gap — offering artists, curious beginners, and material explorers an accessible entry point into sustainable making. Come experiment, ask questions, and grow your understanding of what materials can be when we work with life rather than against it.
$100 total for two sessions. This includes all materials. Venmo @takeupspace
