About this Event
What to Expect
Muslim funerals are known to be expedient, with the burial happening often within the same day. What happens within those 24 hours, and how do Muslims view the afterlife? Find the answers to these questions and a demonstration of the ritual cleansing of the deceased on a visit to Masjid Pusara Aman, the only mosque in Singapore that conducts complete funeral rites.
About My Prayers and Practices
Every F1 season, we will see 10 religious leaders standing along the racing track to bless the road. We can typically identify the leaders of our own faith but there are religions in Singapore which are less-heard of, though they are celebrated by some of our local communities. As a multicultural melting pot, many religious communities have taken root and established their practices on our little red dot. From the Jains and Zoroastrians to the Jews and Orthodox Christians, we hope that participants can join us on a soul-nourishing journey to the places of worship of the major religions in Singapore and learn about their birth, coming-of-age, marriage and death prayers and practices.
We hope that through our tours, it will enable us to explore and negotiate our own sense of self and appreciate our religious diversity in Singapore. Through the various events, we hope participants have a deeper understanding of race, religion and social cohesion. We hope you will gain multiple perspectives and connect your own stories of multicultural and multireligious heritage with those of others. Through facilitated dialogues with the religious leaders, we hope to provide opportunities for participants to engage the hosts in candid and heartfelt conversations.
About the Organisation
Built in 1972, Masjid Pusara Aman once served the residents of Kampung Bereh and Kampung Belimbing. Adopting the motto of “Jenazah Friendly, Family Friendly”, the mosque works to engage families and the community despite being situated away from residential neighbourhoods – and still yet serves more than a 1000 regular congregants. Masjid Pusara Aman is the only mosque in Singapore that has licensed funeral parlour facilities – their facilities to perform cleansing rites for the deceased were even used as a template for the NEA Burial Preparation Facility!
About the Host
Ustaz Akmal and Ustaz Hasbi do not view their work at Masjid Pusara Aman as out of the ordinary – Ustaz Hasbi professes that he came to find work at the mosque when he visited the cemetery for his own mother’s funeral and saw an advert for an opening! There is a saying that “only the strong can work at Pusara Aman”, but this may well be not because of the supernatural, but because the mosque is uniquely busy throughout the week with mourners, unlike the other 71 across the country.
