In partnership with the Artists and Artisans – A Cooperative Gallery, 229 Market Street, Lewisburg, PA 17837 and their show “Creative Genes, A Family Show,” the Lewisburg Arts Council is hosting abstract artist David Yust. David will be lecturing about his career as an abstract painter. David Yust is a well-known abstract artist from Colorado. In addition to his extensive artistic contributions, he also influenced hundreds of art students in over four decades of teaching at Colorado State University. David received the National Art Education Association Award, Pacific region, Art Educator of the Year in Higher Education.
Artist’s Bio
David Yust explores a wide variety of shapes for his prints and paintings, from the obvious rectangle to circles, three-dimensional canvases, and even heart-shaped canvases. Each new shape and size creates its own challenges to explore, combining geometry, sharp lines, and organic shapes. Color and contrast also play a major role in David’s work; he is passionate about the study of color! So much so that he made up a term: CHROMAXIOLIGIC. It appears in many of his paintings’ titles. It’s a combination of the word chroma meaning color, and the word axiology, meaning the study of color and colors of the same value.
In David’s words:
Since the early 1960s my artworks have been about combining geometric and organic imagery. I am still fascinated by the inexhaustible challenges of abstraction. I am convinced that the imagery coming from inside my head is significantly more absorbing and inspiring for me personally than realistic imagery. However, how do images get inside one’s head without mentally processing, thinking about, and considering where ideas come from and observances about the world in which we are living?
That being said, I am always reading, soaking up information wherever I can find it, and observing the real world I live in, therefore, all that informs my artwork.
“Creative Genes, A Family Show” at the Artists and Artisan’s Gallery will be open an hour before and an hour after the lecture from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm on Sunday, April 26, 2026. The show includes artwork from five family members: paintings by David Yust, pottery by Erin Brown, jewelry by Joan Yust and Becca Brown, and photography by Joel Yust.
