A Philadelphia musician who proudly carries a torch for the city’s deep soul legacy, Mutlu forges a genuine connection with every audience he meets.
Rising from the Philly music scene, Mutlu played clubs throughout the city before landing his first tour opening for Joe Jackson. Since then, he has toured extensively across the U.S. and Europe alongside his longtime musical brother Amos Lee, who discovered Mutlu’s music as both of their careers were taking off. He has also found an advocate in Daryl Hall & John Oates, who invited Mutlu to support a national theater tour.
Mutlu (pronounced moot-loo) is a first-generation American whose parents emigrated from Turkey in the 1970s. He discovered the strength of his voice in high school while singing in a Broadway revue. Though he initially didn’t plan to pursue music professionally, he spent countless hours honing his craft while earning a marketing degree from Drexel University—writing songs, practicing guitar, and playing open mics. Now more than fifteen years into his career, Mutlu believes his Turkish heritage deeply informs his perspective as an artist.
From the smooth, soul-inflected love song “Caramel” (echoing the Gamble & Huff sound of the ’70s), to the uplifting “Lifeline,” to the deeply personal “Scarred,” Mutlu unites his diverse catalog through the emotional power of his voice. His sweet, silky tone has earned recognition from The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. WXPN’s Bruce Warren once described his sound as “a mix of soul, reggae, world music, and folk, all tied together in the singer-songwriter tradition.”
Mutlu launched his career on Manhattan Records with his 2008 debut Livin’ It, produced by mentor and friend T Bone Wolk. Since then, he has grown an international audience through relentless touring, multiple appearances on Live From Daryl’s House, and a steady stream of independent releases, including 2019’s Good Trouble. While songs like “Livin’ It,” “Hello Morning,” and “One Life With You” remain staples of his set, Mutlu sees the live experience as something far deeper.
“For people who know the songs, it’s about giving them something more than they’d get on the record,” he says. “It’s about creating a community and finding a real connection.”
