The Anerio Insitute and the Cincinnati Oratory present the second-annual Musical Oratory of Lent, an evening of sacred music, Scripture, and prayer in beautiful and historic Old St. Mary's Church to help you enter more deeply into the spirit of Lent and Passiontide. The centerpiece of the musical devotions will be the heartbreaking 'Stabat mater' in g-minor, by the Venetian composer Antonio Caldara.
In addition to this major choral work, the evening will feature Scriptures and spoken reflections on the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary, hymns for everyone to sing, and extended instrumental meditations on the sorrows of Mary and her union with Christ's suffering that is a model to all of us.
Especially noteworthy are the four Saetas for organ composed by turn-of-the-century Spanish organist Eduardo Torres. These haunting and unique works are songs-without-words based upon the evocative and mournful traditional Andalusian religious songs that are sung during Holy Week processions.
Free admission; freewill offering greatly appreciated. Free parking and parking attendant will be available on-site. Duration about 1.5hrs.
