About this Event
How can venues work together to secure the future of grassroots music in Sheffield?
Working on the principle that a collective voice is the most powerful, this event is an invitation for grassroot music venue operators to start a conversation about a possible venue network, how it could work and what they’d want to achieve.
Sally Oakenfold, chair of the Music Venues Alliance Brighton (and booker at Brighton’s 150 capacity Hope and Ruin) will be speaking on her experience setting up and maintaining the city’s venue network. Sally will talk through their successes and challenges, as well as what still needs to be done.
This event has been developed in conversation with the Music Venues Trust and is open to anyone helping to manage a grassroots music venue or independent club in the city.
We’re using the following definition of a grassroots music venue:
- Independent
- Max 2000 capacity
- Live music or electronic music events are a core of the financial model
---
The aims of a Music Venue Network could be:
- Promote communication and knowledge sharing between venues.
- Encourage the creation of a “unified voice” to speak together in advocacy of venues across the city. Seeking to promote greater leverage when challenging plans that threaten the grassroots music scene.
- Provide a forum where the sector as a whole could speak with the council on key issues, with a view to building a mutually beneficial relationship.
- Encourage collaboration between spaces.
