The opera tells the story of Mary Lennox who upon being orphaned by cholera in India, was sent to live with her reclusive, grieving uncle. She discovers a hidden garden at her uncle's Yorkshire estate, and her friendship with Colin, a boy who believes himself to be an invalid.
