About this Event
Hello everyone!
I'm putting on another solo concerto on Saturday, April 11th at 4:30 PM in the concert hall at Piano Gallery in Orem, Utah. There were some technical difficulties with the last one and I wasn't able to record, but hopefully this one will be problem-free. It is also being live-streamed. I'll send the link to anyone interested once I have it.
I've chosen and organized the pieces carefully to tell a sort of story, and progress in a logical way.
The first is by one of my favorite composers, Alexander Scriabin. This sonata is one he started writing at 15 in the Moscow Conservatory, and he completed when he was 20. He wrote that it was about a night on the "southern seashore." His writing is so colorful and vivid, sometimes you can almost feel the ocean wind on your face.
The next two pieces take a sort of darker, more mysterious turn and explore the harsher sides of the ocean. I've especially grown to love "The Sunken Cathedral" and "Reflections in the Water." "La Biondina" is actually a piano arrangement of a Neopolitan song written by one named Peruchini. I'm convinced it's a romantic serenade-by-boat in the water canals of Venice. It's Liszt, so of course romance is involved, and it is quite heavenly!
The last one is one I grew up listening to. Chopin left Poland at a young age to study music in Paris, but was unable to ever return to his home due to either the civil war, or his health. It's a fact that haunted him until the day he died. Much of his music has a sort of nostalgic melancholy, a longing for home; but it's never a cynical, depressed longing. There is always at least one ray of sunshine. This piece, I think, has it too. To me, it sounds like the journey home, and I thought it would a nice tone to end on.
I'm planning on expounding a bit more on each piece, so please join the stream or come in person!
