Music in theatre can transform a scene’s emotional temperature, intensify dramatic tension, and give shape to silence. This three-day theatre music workshop examines music as a dynamic storytelling tool, positioning sound not as an accompaniment but as an active presence within performance.
Led by Amod Bhatt, the workshop draws on decades of work that have shaped contemporary Indian theatre. A recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Bhatt has composed for landmark productions including Yahoodi Ki Ladki, Phaedra, Rashomon Gate, Mrittunjay, Andha Yug, and Mitti Ki Gadi, collaborating with leading directors across India. Trained under B. V. Karanth, he brings together classical, folk, and experimental elements to create music that functions as a vital force within a play.
The workshop begins with breath and rhythm warm-ups, collaborative vocal exercises, and the creation of simple soundscapes to explore how live music shapes mood and scene energy. As the day progresses, the voice and body are treated as primary instruments. Through resonance training, body percussion, rhythmic cues, and ensemble exploration, participants examine how sound can influence movement, character expression, and dramatic intention.
The final phase shifts to practical theatrical composition. Participants craft short melodic ideas, build atmospheric sound layers, and work in groups to score and perform a dramatic scene. The workshop concludes with a live presentation, peer feedback, and a discussion on applying these approaches to future theatre projects, alongside reflections from Bhatt’s own artistic journey.
Open exclusively to actors and directors with a minimum of five years of theatre experience.
