Musical Tribute to The Decade of Centenaries 2023
“A Deep Ravine: Reflections on a Divided Ireland” is a powerful musical suite that offers a profound exploration of life along the border during the era of partition in Ireland. Presented by Music Generation Cavan/Monaghan, this exceptional performance brings together over 100 young musicians from border counties, telling the story of a pivotal moment in history through music, narrative, and reflection.
Commissioned by acclaimed composer Michael Rooney and featuring a script by the distinguished writer Tommy Mc Ardle, A Deep Ravine captures the emotional and social impacts of the creation of two states, North and South, 100 years ago. The production invites audiences to engage with the historical reality of partition, while also offering a platform for creative and cultural collaboration across generations and borders.
At the heart of this production is the newly formed Music Generation Cavan/Monaghan Cross Border Youth Folk Orchestra, a diverse ensemble of young musicians from Ireland’s border counties as well as Scotland and Ukraine. They blend a wide array of musical genres and styles, performing alongside talented actors from the local community.
Performances have already captivated audiences at prestigious venues, including The Magical Spiegeltent at Hilton Park in Clones, The Guildhall in Derry, and The National Concert Hall in Dublin. The show is a testament to the power of music to reflect on the past, heal divisions, and celebrate shared culture. We are now especially looking forward to sharing it with our local audience at the Garage Theatre in Monaghan.
