About this Event
We are excited to teach you how to grow your own mushrooms! During the workshop you will learn the steps to inoculating a log with mushroom spawn.
This class offers a comprehensive opportunity to learn how to cultivate shiitake, lion's mane, and oyster mushrooms. From log selection to mushroom storage, you'll gain a thorough understanding of the process and take home your own log(s) to nurture into fruiting.
Workshop leaders Chandler Womack and Sean Williams will cover how to source mushroom logs, what trees provide the best wood for this purpose, how to source inoculation equipment, and how to actually do the task itself. It's an exciting opportunity to explore a new skill and gain hands-on experience in mushroom cultivation.
Several electric drills and hammers will be available for use, but class participants are encouraged to bring their own hammers and drills (with 5/16 drill bit) if they wish to avoid waiting for a tool to become available. The totem method of log inoculation will also be demonstrated by Kalyx volunteers, but the DIY portion of the workshop will be the drill/plug method.
- The workshop begins at 1pm and ends at 4pm, April 12, 2026
- Sales close Fri, April 10, or when sold out. Space is limited!
- Children are welcome to attend but must be closely monitored by their adult guardian (see separate tickets).
- The inoculated log(s) and written instructions are included in the class fee.
- The cost of the workshop is $35 (one log) per participant or $45 (two logs).
This is an outdoor event, so please dress accordingly. In the event of bad weather, a rain date will be scheduled.
NOTE: PLEASE wear close-toed shoes and pants - we will be moving heavy logs and using hot wax!! Eye protection and gloves are also recommended.
