About this Event
The NYC Mushroom Network is partnering with NYBG Bronx Green-up & Karol's Urban Farm to inoculate wood waste from the urban forest to cultivate mushrooms! Come learn about log-based mushroom cultivation in this hands-on workshop discussing best practices for log sourcing, inoculation, and incubation.
The event will also feature mushroom-themed foods and a tree-inspired art project!
This event is sponsored by the City Parks Foundation - NYC Greenfund Grassroots Grant program, and is a part of series of MushNet log inoculation part of series of MushNet mushroom log inoculation workshops in Spring 2026.
About the NYC Mushroom Network
The NYC Mushroom Network is a grassroots coalition upcycling organic and wood waste from the NYC urban forest to expand mushroom cultivation across the city’s community gardens and green-spaces. We partner with parks organizations, arborists, and foresters to source suitable substrates, and increase access to resources and hands-on training for urban growers. Through partnerships, educational programs, cultivation projects, and research, we aim to build a hyperlocal mushroom network and model circular practices in urban forestry and agriculture. We see community-based mushroom cultivation as a pathway to food sovereignty, environmental remediation, climate resilience, and waste diversion in New York City.
About Karol's Urban Farm
Karol’s Urban Farm is a 1.3-acre community garden located within the Castle Hill NYCHA campus, with a farm stand that serves local residents. The farm is grounded in principles of food sovereignty, environmental justice, and collective care, and aims to expand access to specialty edible mushrooms in the South Bronx.
About NYBG Bronx Green-up
Since 1988, Bronx Green-Up (BGU), the community gardening outreach program of The New York Botanical Garden has helped Bronx residents transform vacant, abandoned lots into vibrant green spaces, the community gardens, school gardens, and urban farms of the Bronx. BGU provides horticultural advice, technical assistance, and training to community gardeners, school groups, and other organizations interested in improving urban neighborhoods in the Bronx through greening projects.
About the Instructors
Joanna Borrero is a community mushroom educator, who has led mushroom cultivation workshops for NYRP and Bronx River Alliance. She co-chairs the Bronx River Foodway and is an advocate for parks.
Sidney Bynum is a marketer who leads events and workshops, and supports spawn development for NYC Mushroom Network. She formerly worked with MiOhMy Farms, a mushroom farm cooperative in the Bronx.
