About this Event
Families impacted by dementia are invited to join the Museum at Eldridge Street and CaringKind to explore the historic New York City neighborhood of the Lower East Side. Imagine the smell of pickles and the sounds of children playing in the streets was heard everywhere. The Museum's Scott Brevda brings the neighborhood's community spaces alive to 360 Lexington Avenue using images, sounds, and history! What do these smells, sounds, and images bring to mind? Share them with us and learn what life was and continues to be like in this vibrant part of New York City.
We will discover places like Seward Park, the first free municipal playground in the country, Lowe’s Canal Street Theater, P.S. 1, tenement apartments, pushcart vending, and other professions that characterized the neighborhood.
Following the conversation, you'll have a chance to talk with other participants, the Museum and CaringKind staff over light refreshments.
The Museum at Eldridge Street is housed in the Eldridge Street Synagogue, a magnificent National Historic Landmark that has been meticulously restored. Opened in 1887, the synagogue is the first great house of worship built in the United States by Eastern European Jewish immigrants. Today, it is the only remaining marker of the great wave of Jewish migration to the Lower East Side that is open to a broad public who wishes to visit Jewish New York.
