Mount Ararat is a dormant volcano forming a near-quadripoint – a point on Earth where four distinct territories meet – between Turkey, Armenia, Iran and the Nakhchivan exclave of Azerbaijan.
Made up of two volcano peaks – Great Ararat which rises 5,165masl is the highest point in Turkey; while Little Ararat rises in a smooth, steep, nearly perfect cone to around 3,896 masl.
Traditionally associated with the mountain on which Noah’s Ark came to rest at the end of the Flood – above the sea in the zone of eternal freeze – Ararat’s northern and eastern slopes rise from the broad alluvial plain of the Aras River; and on the west a low pass separates it from the long range of other volcanic ridges, extending westward toward the eastern Taurus ranges.
Although trekking on Mount Ararat doesn’t require any technical skills, crampons are required for the last 1.5 hours of the climb to the summit. However, for most of the way the path is a pleasant walk – and the only real challenge here is the altitude. Yet slow, and steady wins the race as they say; so we will take be taking it slow, adding an acclimatization day to ensure everyone makes it to the top – let’s go!

Today’s elevation gain will be around 1,100 meters and we will walk for around 7.3kms. Tonight, we camp in tents.

Day 5: Ararat summit
Today we wake up just after midnight – usually around 1 or 2 am – to have breakfast and a hot drink, before rechecking our equipment and heading out to tackle the summit of Mount Ararat.
Keeping a slow tempo, we should reach the peak within five to seven hours, to enjoy a well-deserved hot meal and a couple hours rest; before heading down to camp one for the night. Today’s elevation gain will be around 937 meters, followed by a descent to 3,300 meters. We will walk for around 13 to 14 kms (up and down) on alpine tundra terrain.
