In the history of music Mozart stands alone in his mastery of all the musical forms of his age, particularly his mature operas, which are among the greatest ever written. This November, York Opera are proud to present four choice excerpts that highlight his skill in presenting stories, comic and serious, through the most beautiful and memorable music you will ever hear. Our scenes include a section from ‘Idomeneo – King of Crete’, a retelling of a Greek myth involving storms, betrayals and vengeful gods. ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ has a claim to being the most famous opera ever written, a comic and irreverent tale of deception and suspicion, with some marvellous vocal ensembles. ‘Don Giovanni’ is a retelling of the shocking story of the unprincipled Don Juan, and the opening scene of the opera includes both a duel and Leporello’s famous ‘catalogue’ aria, running through a list of the Don’s conquests all over Europe. ‘The Magic Flute’ is a fantastical tale of an imprisoned princess and the trials of Prince Tamino and his companion Papageno to gain her release. Comic and serious by turns, it rightly retains its place as one of the most performed of all operas worldwide, and provides a fitting finale to this celebration of Mozart’s operatic mastery.
Performed in the welcoming and accessible Gillygate venue, The Citadel, and featuring a top class array of soloists, this is a production not to be missed.
