The art of translating the complexity of identity, personal history, and the importance of acceptance into movements and colors.
About this Event

Would you sometimes wonder about your identity? How does the political and social context you live in influence your relation to yourself and the world?

In the exhibition "In Multiplicity", currently on display at the Gallery Under the Mango Tree, the Jamaican/German artist - Barbara Walker shares profound stories of migration, personal and social history, identity, body and self awareness . While the exhibition invites viewers to introspect and explore the complexities of histories while navigating the past and present, it also hints that the future depends on how we interact with the present.

Experimenting with deep information channels that include meditation, observing, intuition, imagination and body memory as vitals to creating one's own path, “Moving perspectives “ is an interactive workshop conducted by Lavia Lin ( artist ) and Elsa Rousson ( dancer) inviting participants to explore those themes through unique dance and painting interaction that delves into identity, acceptance, positivity, and the appreciation of one's own personal history.

Through creative exploration, you will engage in a dialogue with Walker's artworks, merging movements with colors to ignite the light within yourself. This workshop is a way to enhance the possibility to understand ourselves and appreciate the presence of the other, our intertwining personal and political narratives, and experiencing the story of art.

Lavia Lin

Lavia began painting at the age of 7, from childish doodles, fairy tales to dream-like worlds, her hands were always dipped in paints and holding crayons. In the years of exploring, searching and finding her artistic expressions, her art has always been colourful.

Growing up in the family-owned Live Music Bar ‘’House of Blues & Jazz’’ in Shanghai, music became an essential part of the memories of Lavia’s upbringing. From live concerts to recorded music, music fascinates her, in the flowing movements of tunes, melodies and rhythm; the art of improvisation in jazz; and in the harmony of soloists conversing with each other. Her love for music has become her artistic inspiration. She uses colours, brushstrokes and textures to mirror the emotions, memories and imagination from listening to music.

Through her art, Lavia experiments in ways how music and visual arts interact and explores the meaning of “imagining music”. An important aspect of Lavia’s art is the action, ‘the moment of creation’, namely live painting. She enjoys the direct interaction with music, and creates visual recordings at concerts. Lavia has performed with international music artists in different genres ranging from jazz, ambient, improvisation, original singer-songwriter to classical music, with the aim of bringing together different cultures by connecting visual arts and music.

Elsa Rousson

Elsa is convinced that everybody can dance. For her, dancing is about feeling the rhythm first, and translating it into movements.

She started her dance practices with modern jazz classes from 5 to 11 years old, and had fun creating her own choreographies, based on the songs’ lyrics, story and melody. Growing up, she joined different dance groups, going from hip hop to zumba. The performances and team spirit present developed her cooperation skills as well as some rigor and perseverance to achieve her goals.

Later, she explored the couple dance universe, starting with rock n’ roll, her parents being her first teachers. She continued with initiations to ballroom dances such as waltz, paso-doble, tango and cha cha cha. In her years living in Spain, she delved into the latino world of bachata, cumbia and salsa, learning at the same time about the historical background of the dances and their cultural importance.

When she arrived in Berlin in March 2023, she discovered the Brazilian couple dance called Forró and fell in love with the songs and the community. At the same time, she started to regularly practice a more conscious and spiritual dance called Biodanza. Her curiosity for the relation between the mind and the body grew, as she explored deeper connections with herself and others while dancing.

In 2024, she joined a Musical theater amateur group in Berlin, and now keeps on exploring cultures through practices such as Capoeira, Bollywood, or Hawaiian dances.

She has always loved to share her passion for dancing around her, in a playful and respectful way, inviting the participants to follow their own rhythm.
