We’ll screen the movie The Martian, a great Ridley Scott film based on the novel by Any Weir, who also wrote Project Hail Mary. Featuring Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, and many more familiar faces, the film displays the resilience, loyalty, sacrifice, and humanity of a crew of astronauts and their earth-bound support staff through a rescue effort that brings the whole world together…and does all this with warmth and great humor.
During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return.
We’ll watch and discuss the main themes, but while having fun at the same time. We’ll serve finger food, handheld snacks, drinks, and we’ll have an old fashioned popcorn machine, of course. Come laugh and connect and see if we can also find a deeper existential meaning in each other.
