ABOUT THE "MOVEMENT-BASED DEVISING" WORKSHOP

This movement-based workshop is designed for performers, dancers, and physical storytellers interested in using the body as the primary tool for devising new work. Drawing from Lecoq, mime, dance, and theater, participants will engage in movement research, group play, and solo explorations to develop physical narratives.

Through structured exercises, we’ll explore:

  • How to make bold, intuitive choices without overthinking.
  • Developing ideas in both individual and group dynamics.
  • Bridging the gap between abstract movement and theatrical storytelling.

This workshop is great for dancers looking to deepen their theatricality and actors wanting to expand their physical vocabulary. Some movement experience is helpful but not required—just a willingness to engage in physical play and experimentation.

ABOUT SYD FRANZ

Syd Franz (aka Les B. Frank) is a trans nonbinary multi-hyphenate performer bouncing between Brooklyn and the Bay. They work with dance, physical theater, and drag to explore and create expansive worlds, relationships, and stories guided by queer maximalism, healing, magic, and possibility. They’ve been a devising collaborator with Detour since 2017, attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, and are a campy horror-obsessed child of Clutch the Pearls.
