This presentation will stoke your interest in cross country (XC) ski traverses in Alaska. Olive will talk about the different styles and strategies folks use to travel through the mountains of Alaska, and the kinds of equipment they use to accomplish these trips. In addition, Olive will present specific options for traverses, from good trips for getting started to more lengthy, committing big mountain traverses. Frank Olive has travelled in the mountains of Alaska for over 30 years. Despite the fact that he has slowed down a bit in his fifties, he still loves being in the mountains in the beautiful spring weather of March and April. He has spent hundreds of days skiing and climbing in the AK Range, completed three Alaska Mountain Wilderness Ski Classics (winning 2), and has also had the chance to do more than a dozen 6+ day mountain traverses over the years.
Olive is also the current author of the Fairbanks Area Rock Climbing Guide. When he's not hanging out with his kids, he works as a staff member at UAF Outdoor Adventures and teaches outdoor classes. He is also one of the Alaska Alpine Club staff advisors.
