MEET OUR AMAZING DJS!
Rod Relucio is based in Chicago. Widely known as a Teacher/Dancer, Rod is gaining recognition as a DJ around the U.S. and abroad (Canada, India, Poland, Italy, Mexico, etc...),. He creates a playlist that causes waves of emotion and energy, keeping the dancers engaged through the night. Rod strives to create a musical atmosphere that inspires dancers and connects with them on the emotional level.
He has DJ’d at the Windy City Tango Festival, Cleveland Tango Bowling Marathon, Tango on the Rocks, Tango Maya Festival, and Holiday Tango Weekend. You can hear him monthly in Chicago at the 312 monthly milonga, as well as other milongas. He is the co-organizer of the Windy City Tango Festival in Chicago, held annually in July.
Dagny Arizona Miller is an Argentine tango dancer, instructor, and DJ based in New York City, with over 25 years of dance experience. As a professional dancer, she approaches DJing with deep respect for the emotional arc of the evening, believing that every song is played for a reason.
She hopes you leave the milonga feeling like it should be longer-or slightly annoyed because you really meant to rest, but your next favorite song just came on.
Her DJing reflects the same values as her teaching: connection, presence, and a love for music that invites dancers to stay curious, grounded, and fully engaged until the last tanda.
Join her for classes in New York City, at Abrazos Tango Festival, which she co-organizes with Mariela Franganillo each second weekend of November, or on their immersive tango and cultural tour to Buenos Aires every July.
Tommy Smith - Tommy discovered tango in early 2012 in Boise, Idaho, which he still calls home. Immediately becoming obsessed, his love for exploring both the technical and emotional facets of tango has only grown since. His skills and interests run the full spectrum: teaching, performing, and organizing - but DJing edges them all out as his top tango passion.
You won't find Tommy more animated or joyful than when he's behind the laptop, watching and grooving along with the dancers he's playing for. His DJphilosophy is simple: play songs that slap, tandas that get dancers' feet on the floor, and craft a journey that will lead to deep connection. Tommy has a holistic approach to DJing, paying special attention to opportunities to enhance the dancer's experience beyond just choice in music. Throughout the night, you'll find him carefully choosing the perfect cortina, using volume to manage energy, and harassing organizers with questions like "So...just how much control do we have over these lights?"
Tommy has a passion for both traditional and alternative tango music and DJing, pursuing the rarer path of professionally DJing both. He draws upon his 13 years of experience DJing traditional milongas to inform his alternative style, believing that the key to success of DJing alt is to treat it like a traditional set - creating a dynamic flow, varying energies and styles, and playing music with rhythms and emotions dancers delight in connecting to.
To educate and motivate beginning DJs, progressing DJs, and those interested in tango music, he offers semi-regular DJ workshops. Events he has DJ'd at include Marathon Z (DC), Tango on the Rocks (Denver), Austin Spring Tango, Abrazo (Montreal), and the Ann Arbor Tango Marathon. He is excited to be DJing at the Motown Tango Marathon for the first time!
James Valentino is a passionate and dedicated tango teacher, DJ, and organizer in Detroit, Michigan. He’s the creator of the Motown Tango Marathon in Detroit. He has been teaching and DJing for over a decade, and his enthusiasm for the tango is evident when meeting him. James has a unique style that combines his love of music with his love for dance. He always makes sure to connect with his guests, and his energy and enthusiasm on the dance floor is contagious. With his drive and creativity, James is making a lasting impression in the tango DJing world. He is constantly pushing himself to stay ahead of the curve and explore new music genres as well as the many golden age orchestras. James is passionate about connecting with other DJs and teachers and learning from their experiences, making him a true student and master of the craft.
