Presenter: Patricia Byers, MD
Bio:
Professor of Surgery and Chief of Surgical Nutrition in the Division of Trauma, Burns and Critical Care at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She graduated with her doctor of medicine degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine and went on to complete a surgical residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital. She is board certified in both general surgery and surgical critical care.
During her more than 30 years on the faculty, Dr. Byers has developed interests in trauma systems, trauma prevention, and intestinal failure. In this context, she has been active in the Florida Committee on Trauma for many years and served as Vice Chair and Chair, as well as the State Trauma Medical Director for the Florida Department of Health. Dr. Byers is the immediate past president of the Florida Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. During her tenure as president there were several important projects initiated including the development of a Joint Advocacy Committee as a coalition across the state of Florida and the revitalization of the Resident and Associate Society (RAS). Within the RAS, an active medical student subcommittee was formed with Florida Chapter members serving as mentors. Dr. Byers is a Florida Governor and currently serves on the Board of Governors Health Policy and Advocacy Workgroup, Advocacy Pillar and is Vice-Chair of the Grass Roots Engagement Workgroup. Her outstanding work in caring for patients with intestinal failure has resulted in a busy referral practice throughout the region of the most difficult and challenging cases.
Dr. Byers’ has focused her research interests in trauma and nutritional support, and she has published numerous articles and book chapters on these topics. She currently holds research grants in motorcycle, bicycle and pedestrian safety, and in the study of short bowel syndrome patients.
During her career, Dr. Byers has received numerous awards and honors, including the prestigious “Ray Alexander Award” from the Florida Chapter and the “Injury Prevention Award” from the Florida Department of Health. She has maintained a long-standing commitment to teaching, a part of her career that has been recognized by numerous teaching awards from students and residents, including the “Duane Hutson Lifetime Teaching Award” from the graduating Chief Residents.
As immediate past-president, Dr. Byers intends to invigorate the past-presidents group to become more active in the Chapter and to continue to work in advocacy efforts.
