About this Event

Public screening of the film (2023, France/Belgium, 80 min)

With subtitles: French, English, Arabic, Bambara, Italian

Screening will be followed by a discussion and Q&A session focused on Search and Rescue (SAR) in the Mediterranean and the growing criminalization of humanitarian aid at sea.

In collaboration with Maison Française, the Institute for French Studies, and the Center for European and Mediterranean Studies

Directed by Muriel Cravatte

"Mothership, the third documentary from Belgian-French director Muriel Cravatte, plunges us into the intersecting journeys of people in exile and rescue sailors, inviting us to ponder the issues of migration and solidarity. This film was shot in the Central Mediterranean Sea over an 11-week period between July and November 2022. The first part of the filming took place on board the Ocean Viking, the rescue ship chartered by the NGO SOS MÉDITERRANÉE, and the second alongside the team of NGO Pilotes Volontaires who patrol the skies over the sea from the island of Lampedusa." (Mothership Press Kit Producer's note, p. 9)

Following the screening:

A brief introduction by Prof. Trombetta (NYU CEMS) offering academic insight into the legal and political framework surrounding SAR operations and the criminalization of aid

A Q&A session featuring two prominent voices:

Sophie Beau, President of SOS MEDITERRANEE, who will share perspectives from the frontlines of humanitarian rescue missions

Sean Binder, SAR volunteer and human rights activist, known internationally for his advocacy following his own prosecution for humanitarian work

Light reception will follow.
