Kona Orchid Society presents its annual Mother’s Day Orchid Show, Plant & Craft Sale. Sat. May 2. Time is 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Makaeo Pavilion at Kona Old Airport State Recreational Area. Admission is $2 cash.A $20 Early Bird admission is 8-9 a.m. and limited to 100 attendees for exclusive first access to sale plants and a complimentary cup of coffee. Fun includes a display of blooming orchids by club members—bring your camera—and there are multiple educational opportunities though out the day.
Free informative presentations include “Phalaenopsis schillerana” by Mathias Seelis at 10 a.m., “You’ve Got Questions, I’ve Got Answers” by Phoenicia Zeller at 11 a.m. and “Beyond the Basics: Unusual Orchids You Can Grow in Kona” by Heather Herrick at noon. Master Gardeners will be available to answer your plant questions while Plant Pono addresses invasive species and Hawai‘i Ant Lab covers Little Fire Ant management.
“We will have 13 local growers offering a wide variety of plants and 17 craft vendors,” details KOS organizer Bob Zeller. “In addition to all kinds of orchids, choose from air plants, anthuriums, cactus and succulents, bonsai, protea, bedding plants, bamboo and fruit trees. Find orchid growing supplies and pots too.”
Plant vendors: Orchid Eros, OrchidPeople, Pele's Island Plants, Island Sun Orchids, Jungle Mist Orchids, Daniel Barb Bulbophyllums, Tim Brown, Michael's Collection, DeMello Air Plants, C & T Product Anthuriums, Tropical Abundance and Pomaikai Plant Company.
Also for sale will be a wide variety of crafted merchandise and gift items geared for mom: art, jewelry, pottery, stoneware, ceramics, stained glass, metalwork and cards. Tasty treats include loaded fries, jams, jellies, pickled veggies, artisan chocolate and coffee.

KONA ORCHID SOCIETY—In its 41st year, the mission of the non-profit Kona Orchid Society is “educating our members and the public about the collection, culture and appreciation of orchids.” Since 1985, KOS has promoted fellowship among orchid enthusiasts. Members include individual hobbyists and commercial growers who meet 6:30 p.m. on the second Friday of the month at the Makua Lani Christian Academy in Kailua-Kona.
