Join the Friends on Thursday January 23rd for a classical and jazz concert in the Library with mother-son duet Jacqueline Burdick Shertzer and James Burdick. James and Jacqueline will perform two very different but equally enjoyable sets. They will open with a set of classical clarinet duets featuring the works of composers such as Mendholsson, Mozart and Kuffner. For their second set, the mother son duo will switch to tenor and alto saxophone to bring you the swinging sounds of Garner, Desmond, Ellington and Rollins. This concert is free and open to the public, sponsored by the Friends of the Bogue Banks Public Library. Spoondrift will be open for refreshments.
James Burdick is a sophomore at West Carteret High School. He plays clarinet and alto saxophone under the tutelage of Mr. Eric Riggs. Within the school system, James participates in the Carteret County Collective Marching Band, West Carteret Symphonic Band, and holds the student chair of the West Carteret Jazz Band Program. Since 2021, James has won top chair positions in the County Honors Bands, District Concert Band, State Honors Concert Band and District Jazz. Outside of school, James plays lead alto in the local jazz and funk group Big Tree. He has performed at venues such as the Wild Caught Festival, Carolina Home and Garden, and Promised Land. As a soloist, he has performed at St. Francis By the Sea Sunday Service. When he isn’t tooting his horn, James is at the beach. He is an avid surfer who prefers to be in the water by sunrise. James aspires to be a commercial airline pilot and will always keep music in his life.
Jacqueline Burdick Shertzer is a local woodwind musician who has worked in public music education for seventeen years. She graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2007 with a B.S. in Education and a B.A. in Music. Since moving to Carteret County in 2008, she found a new niche playing tenor saxophone in local funk, rock, and jazz groups. She now plays with Big Tree alongside her husband, Kyle and son, James. Jacqueline appreciates the opportunities throughout the community to continue to play. She has performed at the Beaufort Music Festival, the Seafood Festival, Wild Caught Festival, local restaurants and bars, weddings, churches, and house concerts. She enjoys performing all styles of music, from German Polkas to Beethoven, Thelonius Monk to The Rolling Stones. Outside of the classroom and practice room, she loves spending time with her spirited ex-race horse and jumping partner, Wyatt.
