May is Lower East Side History Month!
MoRUS will be screening films about taking over abandoned buildings, fixing them up, and turning them into communal housing in the Lower East Side.
May 21st Screening: Umbrella House aka Squatters
Squatters : A NYC Documentary [2021] - Directed by Catalina Santamaria. This film captures the journey of immigrants and artists who reclaimed two abandoned buildings in Manhattan's Lower East Side - Umbrella House and Puerta 10 - transforming them into vibrant homes and creative spaces.
DOORS at 6pm
Location: Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space, 155 Loisaida Ave NY NY 10009
After each showing, there will be a discussion and Q&A with special guests!

More about Lower East Side History Month
Lower East Side History Month is an annual celebration of the stories and peoples of the LES. This year, over 60 organizations -- including museums, arts nonprofits, community centers, small businesses, and gardens, will host learning opportunities, tours, performances, and public events!
The LES and Chinatown have deep histories as sites of refuge, community, and mutual aid -- places created by immigrants for immigrants.
At a time when immigrant communities are being targeted and villainized, we encourage everyone this May to celebrate and honor the extraordinary contributions immigrants from all parts of the world have made to the rich, diverse history of our neighborhood.
