About this Event

Author and New York Times contributor, Alix Strauss, makes a return appearance to Green-Wood! This time, Alix will lead our popular book club series, Mortality & Me. She’ll read excerpts from her two her books, The Joy of Funerals: 20th Anniversary Edition, and Death Becomes Them: Unearthing the Suicides of the Brilliant, the Famous, and the Notorious and lead a discussion about her writing process for each. Bring your questions!

You do not have to have read either book in full to enjoy the event. A portion of each will be sent to attendees in PDF form, via email in advance. These sections will be the basis of our discussion. Both books will be available for purchase and signing.

Please note: This evening discussion will include the topic of suicide

The Joy of Funerals is a collection of fictional stories that explore the lives of nine women, each willing to take drastic measures to fill the voids created by longing and loneliness. The stories are anchored around the character of Nina, a lonely, single thirty-something woman who attends funerals in the hope of connecting with others.

Death Becomes Them: Unearthing the Suicides of the Brilliant, the Famous, and the Notorious, is an eye-opening and intimate portrait of the lonely, sad, and nightmarish lives of notable individuals who took their own lives. The book delves into the deaths of some of our most influential cultural icons: Sylvia Plath, Sigmund Freud, Vincent van Gogh, Abbie Hoffman, Virginia Woolf, and Kurt Cobain, among others.

Free. Registration required. Please consider a $10 to the Green-Wood Historic Fund so that we can continue to offer free and low-cost programs throughout the year.
