Presented by Townsville Civic Theatre and 33 1/3
North Queensland’s favourite Celtic folk band, 33 1/3 are ready to delight audiences with a rousing fusion of both traditional and contemporary songs and tunes. Based in Townsville, 33 1/3 are famous for their driving tempo, skilful playing, and a strong stage performance. They are especially popular at St Patrick’s Day events, and often found at the centre of latenight singing sessions.
33 1/3 are regulars at the Townsville Folk Festival (previously the Palm Creek Folk Festival) and have performed in the Morning Melodies series at both the Townsville Civic Theatre and the J.L. Kelly Theatre in Ingham, the Northern Australia Festival of Arts, The Australian Chamber Music Festival (yes you did read that correctly), the Tablelands Folk Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, Wintermoon Folk Festival, the Townsville Community Music Centre Concert Series, as well as the many pubs around Townsville. The band members form the core of the players for the Irish Session at Molly Malones Irish Pub in Townsville every second Saturday of the month.
The line up for 33 1/3 has undergone several changes over the years with each member in turn leaving their mark and contributing to the sound and character of the band. The current line up of Johnston Davidson on bodhran and vocal, Megan Donnelly on flute and whistle, Sabrina Davidson on fiddle, Glenn Lowry on accordion and Brett Greenland on guitar and vocal have been playing together on and off in various settings for the best part of a decade.
The band’s musical influences are largely based in the Celtic tradition with many reels, jigs, hornpipes, and slip jigs along with traditional songs from the Dubliners, The Irish Rovers, Christy Moore and the Clancy Brothers; and traditional songs with a modern twist from the likes of The Pogue’s, Great Big Sea, The High Kings, Gaelic Storm, The Waterboys and Ed Sheeran.
