The battle of Cambrai lasted (officially) 19 days. The 'tank phase' of the Battle lasted until about 2pm on the first day – 8 hours in total. Many of the technical and military advances later to be used (by both sides) in 1918 were evident, but in the main Cambrai was a battle more familiar to 1917 standards. The key themes were all here – poor advance planning, innovation by the middle ranks and a slow slog in difficult conditions against a well-entrenched enemy. As ever, artillery was the key – to both the initial tank breakthrough as well as what followed.Ross Beadle, our speaker, has a Masters in First World War Studies from Birmingham University, his talks about battles and strategy are always entertaining and animated.
