The RNLI: More Than Just Lifeboats
While their iconic orange boats are famous for coastal rescues, the RNLI’s mission starts long before a crisis occurs. As a charity dedicated to saving lives, the RNLI operates a vast preventative network that includes beach lifeguards, international drowning prevention programs, and vital community education.
We are pleased to host Alan Marsden, a dedicated RNLI Water Safety Advisor and veteran advocate for regional safety. Based in York, Alan has been a key figure in local drowning prevention, frequently collaborating with fire services and rescue boats to promote life-saving techniques.
In this talk, Alan will share his expertise on:
- The "Float to Live" Technique: Understanding the science of cold water shock and why leaning back is your best defense.
- Waterside Responding: How the RNLI empowers businesses and communities near rivers and inland waterways to act quickly.
- Prevention First: Insights into how the RNLI’s educational initiatives are reducing coastal and inland fatalities across the UK.
Alan’s wealth of experience—from public safety demonstrations to helping coordinate "World Drowning Prevention Day"—provides a unique look at how the RNLI works behind the scenes to keep us all safe.
