This summer, youth from Metro Detroit teamed up with Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control, Detroit Animal Care and Control, Ruff Life Photography, and the Detroit Public Library to learn the art of pet photography. They spent time with shelter dogs, capturing stunning portraits and writing heartfelt messages about the animals they met. These stories and photos have come together in More than a Stray, a moving children’s book written by Sue Valentine.Told through the eyes of a lost dog, the book traces her journey to an animal shelter in Detroit — a story of fear, fragile hope, and, ultimately, the joy of finding a loving home. Paired with soulful photographs taken by local kids, More than a Stray celebrates compassion, resilience, and the unbreakable bond between people and animals.
