Join Director and Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Sarah Kohn for the first of a two-part examination of the ways in which portraiture can function beyond just capturing the likeness of an individual. From depicting someone’s social position, including power and status, to their “inner life,” like their character and virtues, portraits can tell us a lot about the person being depicted (the sitter), as well as the artist who made the artwork. In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, this talk will cover American artists creating portraiture in the 19th century. Part two, in April, will cover American artists from the 20th and 21st centuries.
