On February 21, 2025, something truly special will happen in Memphis. We will unveil Monuments to Motherhood at Medical District Park (formerly Health Sciences Park), a powerful new public art installation by New York based artist and activist, Molly Gochman. This collection of large-scale bronze sculptures is a tribute to caregivers—those who dedicate their lives to serving, protecting, and nurturing others. This project aligns perfectly with the mission of the UrbanArt Commission—to transform public spaces by creating opportunities for artists and communities to come together. But in this instance, we are not just transforming a space physically—we are shifting the way we feel about it, the way we engage with it, and the stories we tell about it.
The site of this installation carries deep historical weight. This is where the Nathan Bedford Forrest statue once stood, a space long associated with division. Now, we have the opportunity to reclaim this space with a different lens, monumentalizing not power through oppression, but power through care.
Because monuments matter. They signify power and presence.
With Monuments to Motherhood, we are making a statement: Caregivers deserve to be seen. Their labor deserves to be honored. Their presence is powerful.
Our Executive Director first learned about this project in the most unexpected way—standing in line for snacks at a public art conference, casually chatting with Rebekah Birkan, Molly Gochman’s Studio Production Manager. When she mentioned a series of sculptures called Monuments to Motherhood, Lakeisha knew instantly that Memphis, and specifically this space, was the perfect home for them. This was a chance to bring healing, conversation, and connection to a space that has been waiting for a new story.
Thanks to the generosity of Molly Gochman, this gift to Memphis will not only transform the park visually, but also in spirit. The unveiling will take place on National Caregivers Day and will be a true celebration of community:
✅ A press conference to share the significance of this moment
✅ Free food trucks for caregivers and attendees
✅ Opera Memphis Performance and live DJ
✅ A national spotlight on Memphis' role in using public art as a catalyst for change (Forbes Magazine is covering this!)
