Support Orlando Shelters is hosting our monthly coalition meeting to prepare volunteers to effectively speak during public comment and advocate for our unhoused neighbors.Friday, January 30, 2026
6:30 PM
Broadway United Methodist Church
406 E Amelia Street, Orlando, FL 32803 (Lake Eola Heights)
This meeting marks our first gathering of the new year, and we are honored to welcome Rene Gomez, Civic Engagement Coordinator at the Farmworkers Association of Florida (FWAF), as our guest speaker.
Originally from Mexico, Rene has dedicated his career to public service, with experience spanning health care access, food insecurity, and farmworker and immigrant rights. In his role at FWAF, Rene coordinates the organization’s rapid response team, leads community Know Your Rights trainings, facilitates advocacy opportunities for the FWAF youth group, and supports mutual aid efforts across the organization. He is currently pursuing a Master of Public Administration at the University of Central Florida and is expected to graduate in May 2026. Rene will share insights on grassroots advocacy, community power-building, and how coordinated civic engagement can drive real change.
Support Orlando Shelters is a grassroots coalition of Orange County residents committed to standing up for our unhoused neighbors and pushing back against the growing wave of anti-homeless sentiment in our community.
A recent study revealed that over 40% of Orange County’s unhoused population are children and seniors—our most vulnerable residents—left to face extreme conditions with little to no safety net. These are our neighbors, and we cannot stay silent while they suffer.
The Support Orlando Shelters Campaign was created to respond with compassion, truth, and action. Our mission is to:
Rally community support for converting the Kaley Avenue work release facility into a functional, compassionate emergency shelter
Build a network of residents prepared to speak at public meetings, write op-eds, sign petitions, and visibly support initiatives that help—not harm—unhoused people
Counter disinformation and fear-based narratives with facts, empathy, and unity
We are actively recruiting volunteers interested in:
Sending emails and text alerts
Managing and creating social media content
Planning meetings, events, and future coalition actions
If you believe housing is a human right and that everyone deserves shelter, safety, and dignity, we invite you to join us. Attend the meeting and sign up to get involved.
