What is narcissistic abuse?

Narcissistic abuse is a form of emotional, mental, and psychological abuse that is perpetrated by individuals with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) or tendencies. Narcissistic abusers use various manipulative tactics to control and dominate their victims, including gaslighting, emotional blackmail, verbal and emotional abuse, and isolation.

Narcissistic abusers often have an exaggerated sense of self-importance, lack empathy for others, and believe they are entitled to special treatment. They use their charm and charisma to manipulate their victims and make them feel responsible for their abuse, often blaming the victim for anything that goes wrong in the relationship.

Narcissistic abuse can have long-lasting effects on the victim, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It can be difficult to recognize and recover from narcissistic abuse, but with support and therapy, it is possible to heal from the effects of this type of abuse and move forward towards a healthier, happier life.

What are the effects of Narcissistic Abuse on victims?

The effects of narcissistic abuse in victims can be varied and long-lasting. Here are some examples:

1. Low self-esteem and self-confidence - Narcissistic abuse can leave victims feeling worthless, incompetent, and constantly second-guessing themselves.

2. Anxiety and depression - Victims of narcissistic abuse may develop anxiety or depression from the constant stress and emotional strain of the abuse.

3. Difficulty trusting others - Narcissistic abuse can make it difficult for victims to trust others again, leading to feelings of isolation and loneliness.

4. Feelings of shame and guilt - Narcissistic abusers often blame their victims for the abuse, leaving them with intense feelings of shame and guilt.

5. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) - In severe cases, victims of narcissistic abuse may develop PTSD, which can cause intense flashbacks, nightmares, and other symptoms.

6. Difficulty forming new relationships - Narcissistic abuse can make it difficult for victims to form new relationships because they may struggle with trust issues and have a fear of being abused again.

Fortunately, with the right support and therapy, victims of narcissistic abuse can heal from the effects of the abuse and move forward toward a healthier, happier life. It's important to remember that the abuse was not your fault and that you deserve to be treated with love and respect.

What does Narcissistic Abuse entail?

Narcissistic abusers often use a variety of manipulative tactics to control and dominate their victims, including:

1. Gaslighting: This involves manipulating the victim's perception of reality and making them doubt their own memory, perception, or sanity. Narcissistic abusers may deny or minimize their abuse and even turn the tables to make the victim feel as though they are the one who is abusive.

2. Blaming and projecting: Narcissistic abusers often project their own faults and shortcomings onto their victims, creating a sense of confusion and powerlessness. They may also blame their victims for things that are not their fault, or make them feel responsible for the abuse.

3. Emotional and verbal abuse: Narcissistic abusers often verbally degrade, berate or insult their victims in order to control the relationship. They may use name-calling, put-downs, or non-verbal cues such as eye-rolling or sighing to make the victim feel inferior and powerless.

4. Isolation: Narcissistic abusers will often isolate their victims from their support systems, making it difficult for the victim to find help or escape the abusive relationship. They may prevent the victim from seeing friends or family, control their finances, or limit their access to transportation or communication devices.

5. Withholding love and approval: Narcissistic abusers may withhold positive reinforcement such as love, attention, or affection to manipulate their victims. They may also offer intermittent reinforcement, making the victim crave their approval and making it harder to leave the abusive relationship.

Narcissistic abusers tend to have an exaggerated sense of self-importance, lack empathy for others, and believe that they are entitled to special treatment. They often view their victims as objects to be controlled and manipulated for their satisfaction, rather than as human beings deserving of dignity and respect. It's important to remember that abuse is never justified and you deserve to be treated with kindness and respect.

Who am I? My name is Raquel Soteldo, I am practicing privately under Soteldo Psychotherapy and I am also running these workshops under the umbrella Narcissistic Abuse Recover Clinic (NARC) in Ottawa, Ontario. I am completing a Doctorate program and my specialization is Narcissistic Abuse. I have been studying narcissism in an academic setting since 2004 when I started my undergraduate program in Psychology at York University. I also studied criminology and Applied Behavioural Analysis. I have been practicing for 4 years and have been running these workshops almost every quarter for 4 years as well. I have the support of a supervisor, a therapist, and a mentor. I practice regular self-care and I am an advocate for Narcissistic Abuse Victims. I have direct and indirect experience with individuals who portray Narcissistic Tendencies and Anti-Social Personality Traits as well as those diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. I am experienced in the realms of divorcing narcissists, co-parenting with narcissists, growing up with family members who have the same traits, childhood sexual, physical, emotional and psychological abuse, among so many other things. I come to you humbled by all of my experiences and ready to serve you with some very important information.
