Join us for an evening of culture, history, and community at the Monona Indigenous Roots Dinner, a fundraiser supporting the Four Directions Sculpture Project. Presented by Ho-Chunk Nation in partnership with Monona East Side Business Alliance, Aldo Leopold Nature Center, and Madison Ho-Chunk Community Center. This initiative honors the Ho-Chunk people of the Monona area, past and present, with four statues placed to reflect the cardinal directions. The first sculpture, facing east, will be installed at Aldo Leopold Nature Center and unveiled during the event. Created by Gene Delcourt, apprentice of the late Ho-Chunk artist Harry Whitehorse, this sculpture marks the beginning of a lasting tribute.
Guests will enjoy a multi-course meal served community-style, featuring dishes inspired by traditional Indigenous ingredients. As we share this meal, Ho-Chunk leaders will speak on the ancestral connections to this land and the significance of local burial mounds.
The evening will also include dancers, drumming, and powerful testimonials on the importance of embracing one’s roots. A silent auction will raise funds for the next sculpture in the series and other cultural revitalization initiatives.
