Come pull invasive plants as you walk the trails at the Mono Tract of the Dufferin County Forest!
About this Event

Why?

Where invasive plant species take over, native ecosystems are not able to thrive. We are managing invasive species in the County Forest to protect biodiversity and wildlife habitat, and to ensure that young trees can grow up to form the future forest.

What?

We will be targeting garlic mustard and common buckthorn at this event. Garlic mustard is popping up along many of the Mono Tract's trails, and we are working to prevent it from spreading further into the forest. Common buckthorn is also a problem in this forest, and pulling its seedlings will help stop this species from taking over the understory.

Volunteers are welcome to participate in whatever way suits their needs and abilities! Pick a trail route with a distance and pace that works for you, or take a short walk with staff to an area with lots of buckthorn seedlings to pull.

Where?

We will meet at the Hurontario Street gate to the Mono Tract. Cars can be parked along the side of the road near the gate. Please note that there are no washroom facilities at this location.

What to bring?

• A reusable water bottle

• Comfortable closed-toed shoes for hiking

• Sunscreen and bug spray

• A long-sleeved shirt tucked into long pants, and socks high enough to tuck your pants into (highly recommended to protect against ticks, poison ivy, and wild parsnip)

• Gloves – we will provide these, but if you have your own preferred work gloves/gardening gloves, feel free to bring them!

What will be provided?

• A water jug for refilling water bottles and handwashing

• Trail maps

• Identification guides for target plants

• Work gloves

• Bags for plant disposal

• Portable snacks will be handed out before we hit the trails, and light refreshments will be provided at the end of the event (but not a full lunch - feel free to bring additional food). Please let us know about any dietary restrictions when you register.

In order to participate, you must sign a volunteer waiver when you arrive.

Please register by Wednesday, May 29th!
