Monkey-ing Around!
A theatre workshop by Swabhav Meyeder Dol
A workshop where we channelize the naughty things children already do – jumping around, imitating others, making funny faces – into a little theatre piece based on Anita Moorthy’s ‘Monkey’s Drum’ – the classic folktale of exchange with the trickster Monkey.
Children will learn basics of rhythm, movement, expression and teamwork as they perform the story together, indulging in masti but also practicing the discipline required for any group activity.
About the Facilitator
Swabhav Meyeder Dol is a theatre collective of marginalized girls and women finding their voice through theatre, led by Vartika Poddar. In the last 5 years, the group has created several plays on social and environmental issues and completed over 100 performances in schools, NGOs, gatherings and theatre festivals across West Bengal, and also in Delhi.
The group regularly conducts workshops with children in schools and NGOs. Before Meyeder Dol was formed, Vartika – the co-founder – worked with tribal children in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, children of waste-pickers in Rajasthan, kids in Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, and several parts of West Bengal – helping them tell their stories through theatre.
