Monday Musicales invites audiences to America at 250, a three-concert series that celebrates the range, spirit, and storytelling of American music. All performances will take place at First Lutheran Church, 900 Main Street, Brockton, MA 02301, and begin at 7:00 p.m. Guests are also welcome to come early for a light supper at 5:30 p.m. before each concert. The concerts and suppers are free and open to the public. The series opens on June 8 with a program featuring music by American women composers, including Adoration by Florence Price, Fiesta by Emma Lou Diemer, and Fantasy and Fugue on “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” by Barbara Harbach.
On June 15, American Pride celebrates our LGBQTI+ heritage and will feature acclaimed New York soprano Sarah Pillow and pianist Jeffrey C. Johnson. The evening will also include the premiere of If You See Something, Say Something, a song cycle by Richard Pearson Thomas written especially for Sarah Pillow. Made up of short songs inspired by real 911 messages, the work is funny, strange, and sharply of the moment, giving audiences something truly unexpected to hear.
The premiere will be paired with Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 and several American folk song arrangements by Aaron Copland, creating a program that moves from warmth and reflection to humor, invention, and distinctly American storytelling.
The series concludes on June 22 with a program devoted to music by Black American composers, including Florence Price’s recently rediscovered Cotton Dances, Carl Haywood’s His Eye Is on the Sparrow, Adagio and Fugue by Adolphus Hailstork, and other notable works.
