Retired San Francisco detective John "Scottie" Ferguson (James Stewart) is hired by an old college acquaintance, Gavin Elster (Tom Helmore), to follow his wife, Madeleine (Kim Novak), who he believes is possessed by a spirit. As Scottie becomes increasingly obsessed with Madeleine, he uncovers a complex web of deception and manipulation that leads to a shocking revelation. As he becomes increasingly engrossed in their daily routines, Jeff begins to suspect that one of his neighbours, Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr), has committed a murder. With the help of his girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly) and his nurse Stella (Thelma Ritter), Jeff sets out to uncover the truth, risking his own life in the process.
